To run those big tires properly you will need to re-gear both front and rear axles. If you plan on running 35s or bigger, however, don't plan on your rear axle lasting very long. Think about investing in a heavier-duty axle w/ shorter gears and get front gears to match. That should put you back in the appropriate power band for the XJ without snapping axle shafts. |

Horsepower will be lost, go to 4wd.com they have the best forum for any Q you might have for a jeep, and its not the tranny you'll have to re-gear it's the rear axle you'll have to re-gear |

You dont need to do anything to the transmission, but raising the axle gear ratios would be a good idea. when you put those big tires on it, it will have worse acceleration, but a higher top speed. which is not a good thing for city gas mileage, or offroading. so in order to keep the same acceleration, or improve acceleration at the cost of top speed, with the new tires, would be to change axle ring and pinion gears. |

Leave the transmission alone...until it goes out, anyways. definitely change your gear ratios in your axels. by doing this, you'll lower the top speed, but it will give your rig more umph! i run 32 " tires on my TJ with 4.56 gears, i could definitely run bigger tires with this gear ratio, but taking into consideration that it's a Dana 30/ 35, i don't want to exceed the limit of the axel. also, i'm not sure what transfer case you have, but if the stock cherokee's is the same as the stock TJ, the NV231, i would suggest also investing in a SYE...and possibly some long arms. good luck. |
