The Jeep if you plan to do any serious off-roading, and the Element if you want a daily driver. Hondas have better reliability ratings, but at seven years old either vehicle could have repair issues. Also keep in mind that the Element only seats four and the clamshell doors can be a pain if you have passengers getting in and out of the back seat regularly. For anything you want to know about the Element, go to elementownersclub.com a very active, informative and free site by/ for Element owners. We live in a global society and where a car is made is hard to track. Many so-called "American " cars are built in Canada, Mexico or elsewhere outside the USA. Some Buicks, for instance, are made in China! Many "foreign " nameplates have major manufacturing plants in the United States. Dunno about the Jeep, but the Element is made in Marysville, Ohio if that makes a difference to you. It really comes down the maintenance history for a specific vehicle. Has it been well cared for or ridden hard and put away wet? |

A friend of mine bought a new 2002 early in 2001 and drove it five years, 120,000 miles with no problems. Then he bought a 2005 that was new and it now has 80,000 miles. The second one did go back for a recall on ball joints but that was covered and the dealer paid for a rental car while it was in shop. Can you beat that? Some will argue that foreign cars have better quality but the Jeep had no problems how much better can you ask for? Also, the profit from a foreign car does not help American businesses stay in business. If all the American car companies went broke, the foreign car companies would most likely move production to third world countries and there would go the jobs. Right now they build in America to avoid the import taxes. |

I would pick the Jeep because it has four wheel drive and higher ground clearance. It also depends on what kind of driving you will be doing and or what you will be hauling. In the snow, the jeep. For fuel mileage, the element. |
