I have Maxxis Big Horn 32x11.50x15 mud terrain tires on my Wrangler and they only cost me $520 for four and I drive on them every day on the highway and they are great off road. They hum a little when driving, but aren't too loud. Mickey Thompson has a great selection of off road tires and are a big seller. Check out these websites for Mickey Thompson and other off road tires: quadratec.com/ categories/ jeep_tires/ jcwhitney.com/ autoparts/ Browse/ tf-Browse/ s-10101/ N-111+ 10208+ 600008213/ c-10108 rustysoffroad.com/ mm5/ merchant.mvc?Screen= CTGY &Store_Code= rustys &Category_Code= whe 4wd.com Also, check with your local tire dealers, they may have a sale on certain off road tires. Also, keep in mind that if you want to add 33s to your Wrangler and you do not already have a lift, you will need to add one in order to accommodate those big tires and to keep them from scrubbing. The above websites also sell lift kits (both suspension and body). |

I recently did some shopping around for 33 " tires. I found Sam's Club to be less expensive than anywhere else. The tire cost is comparable to other places (Discount, Big-O, Sears, etc.) but Sam's beat everybody in a big way on the mounting/ balancing and old tire disposal fees. Also I can have them rotated at any Sam's or Walmart, as often as I like. I ordered my tires through their website (they didn't have them in stock). They were delivered to my local Sam's Club, and I wasn't charged until I went in to have them installed. Costco has comparable prices and ordering to Sam's, but they won't install a tire that isn't the factory original size. As for tire makes, I'll second (or third or whatever) what others have said - get a good set of tires that wear a long time. The longest wearing tires I ever had on a Jeep were BF Goodrich All Terrain T/ A-KO's on my 98 TJ. I got 65k miles out of them, and they were not easy miles. They rode very nicely on the highway, were great in snow, and I give them about 9 out of 10 offroad. Lots of folks say great things about Maxxis Bighorns. I have no personal experience with them. I now have two Rubicons, one is lifted with 33's and the other is stock. I went with 33 " Goodyear MTR's for it. $1150 for five tires mounted and balanced. BFG AT-TA-KO's are cheaper. Also my Rubi has 16 " rims - if your TJ is not a Rubicon, you have 15 " rims which will also be cheaper. One more thing, if you have the original rims and no wheel spacers, 33 " tires will rub the lower control arms when you turn the wheel hard-right or hard-left. There is a very simple fix to this: place a washer or two behind the steering stops. It's a 5-minute procedure, very simple. For a complete write-up, look at this site: 4x4xplor.com/ steerstop.html |

Cheap and off road don't go together... I would recomend the BF goodrich also.... They are a little more expensive than some others, but if you have ever had to get a tow truck into the Colorado Mountain trails, then you know that one trip for them will completely pay for the better tires. |
