Oh you can off road with ANY stock car... the question is how far will you get?..... but seriously... thats what jeep wranglers are made for.... of course their are improvements to make that would make it more enjoyable on you and the car... but it should be good to go stock...(assuming its a 4X4) |

Well I guess so! I've off-road in an El Camino! Well it wasn't the ideal vehicle but it got me in the back country when I didn't have a four wheel drive! Good 6 ply mud tires will help mucho and If you have four wheel drive, your in pretty good shape for some off road driving! Of coarse engine size and frame clearance is important for the more aggressive stuff. I would carry a shovel, a good jack, chain and or nylon straps for pulling it out of a mud hole (you can't have enough chain, straps and or wire rope on hand). There are some reasonable winches that can run off your battery and are portable which could save you in a pinch (a less expensive way to go is purchase a Come-A-Long). You might add a screw in auger to connect to in case there are no trees around! If you are lucky, you want need these but you will be glad you brought them along if you do! If crawling over rocks, you might ought to install a rock shield to protect your oil pan! |

Jeep Wranglers are specifically designed to go offroad. |

Depends on the trail. jeeps from the factory are rated trail ready if they can manage the Rubicon. it will have a badge on the side. a stock jeep will handle some trails depending on what they are like. see the jeep forums in quadratec.com or 4wd.com. there are some add ons that you may want to invest in if you are serious about off road. i would suggest a good winch with a synthetic rope line first. my approach has always been to have a back-up just in case you need it. like driving in 2 wheel drive until you start to slip. this makes you reassess the situation before you proceed. having a winch or axle locks would allow you an opportunity to fee yourself find a join a club in your area |

Yess , but after a while you'll be looking at upgrades to get you off the little rocks you'll be scraping ... An el camino is not an offroad car... I'd love to see that thing try following me .. |

We offroad up here in NH and VT all summer-and I'd say half the wranglers are stock. Whether you can MAKE it or not depends on the tires...street tires won't get you through mud and over bad rocks. As for the trail ratings...'RUBICON' is a specific limited run wrangler-'trail rated' is just an advertising gimmick-ALL jeeps are able to tackle trails...but Jeep started to push 'trail rated' as 'something better' to combat the 'other' vehicle companies that try to say 'their' 4 wheel drive vehicles are as good as jeeps. It has nothing to do with meaning the jeep can handle the Rubicon trail... If you have ever driven a Rubicon (I own a 2003) and compared it to a stock wrangler-you will be amazed at the difference! |
