The Jeep comes with a true 19 gallon tank, but used a filler neck that only allows about 16 to 17 gallons to be put in. If you drop your tank and access the inside of the tank through where the sending unit is you and cut the excess filler hose off and utilize the true full tank. This write up is for a YJ, but I think it applies to the TJ as well. |

Run it 'till it's almost empty, and drop the tank. If it's not really empty, check the fuel pickup and make sure it's at the bottom of the tank. If it's empty, check the filler neck to make sure it's not pushed too far down into the tank. Also, before you drop it, make sure the tank isn't dented. |

You have a 19 gallon fuel tank from the factory. If you bought it used perhaps it has a smaller Crawler Comp 14.5 gallon improved departure angle gas tank. |

Beartree could be right. i have a 2000 wrangler sport with the 19 gallon tank and i hit E when i have 3 gallons left. I go about 225 miles on the 16 gallons. I have heard that the gas gauges on TJs arent very accurate. See how many miles you go on those 12 gallons and compare it to how far i can go. If you really want to see if the gauge is accurate, carry around a 4 gallon gas can around with you and run the jeep till it starts to sputter. check the miles to see how far you went. if you cant get to a gas station quickly, you will have the extra 4 gallons in the gas can. This is just a test though. if you get 15 mpg and you have a 19 gallon tank, you should make it last about 285 miles. the 2 things i can think of are that the gauge isnt accurate or you have a smaller aftermarket gas tank. |
