Question: Jeep cherokee xj or jeep wrangler tj?

Which is a better first car. I want an automatic, and it will be a daily driver. I will take it off road, but only on the beach. The most I am willing to spend is $7000, but I'd like to keep my budget at around $5000. What are the pros and cons of each, and which do you think overall is better?

Xj I had an 89 6cy, b/ 4 I modified it w/ 33 "tires/ 3 " lift/ steel bumper/ winch/ etc mpg wasn't all that bad after the mods it was 17-19 again not too bad. They are more comfortable because of the length but a unit body construction (meaning you can only do a suspension lift.(had a fire and destroyed it completely) TJ I have now 03 sport b/ 4 mods smooth ride, good fuel mileage... After mods of 4 " suspension lift/ 33 " tires/ steel bumper/ winch/ etc I am getting 17 mpg and less..ride is rough (could be the shocks) offroading its great but could be better.. need to change gearing or axles to something lower geared. Rubicon.. If you can find one at a good price thats the way to go (as they have dana 44's 4.10 gears front and rear and lockers Sahara: Supposedly have a dana 44 w/ 4.10 gearing very nice offroading. On any lifts you do don't go too high as the higher you go the more unstable the vehicle becomes especially on the highways with wind. Before you put any money down on anything, get a build sheet from the dealer (FREE), and if in Canada (Quebec) call RDPRM ($5-10) have the government do a Vin nr check for your vehicle to make sure its clear on any liens..(very important) Other provinces or in usa not sure what you have but find out GOV is the best.

The only thing you don't mention is the most important difference between the two, for beach driving anyway. Do you want to be able to go topless or not. Answer that, and the rest of the questions will answer themselves.
